Why Should I be Interested In This Course?

This course is designed to provide you with the personal skills needed should you wish to undertake training in counselling.

How Will I Benefit?

The course offers you a greater understanding of your own self - awareness, attitudes and values and helps you to understand your own behaviour patterns. It covers the value of feedback and outlines the relationships between equal opportunities and counselling.

Course Structure:

There are five modules, as follows:

1. Recognise the importance of self awareness for counsellors.

This covers the importance of the need for a counsellor to understand their own self - awareness in the client - counsellor relationship and how such a lack of self - awareness can affect the development of this relationship.

2. Recognise own attitudes, values and beliefs, and how they can impact on learning and counselling.

This relates to developing the ability to recognise and understand how a person's own beliefs and prejudices can help or hinder their learning more about themselves and their counselling role.

3. Understand individual behaviour patterns.

This examines the different behaviour patterns of individuals when on their own or working in pairs or in a larger group.

4. The significance of feedback.

Identifying a person's own emotional and intellectual reactions to feedback following simulated and experimental exercises, developing the ability to reflect on feedback received and how it reinforces or changes the concepts individuals have of themselves.

5. Equal Opportunities issues.

How such issues as access, user friendliness and non - discriminatory practices used by organisations may affect counselling. It will also enable individuals to identify their own responses to equal opportunity practices and how these affect their understanding of themselves.

What Will I Achieve?

You will receive six National Open College Network Credits at Level 3 on successful completion of this course.
